Christoph Sander is the new junior professor for Digital Humanities
Sander studied philosophy at the University of Freiburg and Humboldt University in Berlin and went on to earn his doctorate in the history of science at the Technical University of Berlin. After completing his doctorate, the philosopher and science historian worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Bibliotheca Hertziana (Max Planck Institute for Art History) in Rome and at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin, and conducted research as a knowledge engineer at the German Historical Institute in Rome in the field of digital humanities (DH).
Sander not only supports CERES as a junior professor for DH, but also brings his own research project to the RUB. In his project “Science and Dogma (SCIGMA) Tracing Natural Knowledge within Scholastic Theology (1545–1789),” he investigates the influence of the growing natural sciences on scholastic and dogmatic theology at universities in the early modern period. The project is funded by the European Research Council through an ERC Starting Grant.
In addition, he contributes his expertise in the field of digital humanities to SFB 1475 “Metaphors of Religion” and is already working with the subproject INF "Metaphor Base Camp. Provision of a shared database and further development of digital research methods for religious metaphors." This collaboration will be continued in a possible second funding phase of the Collaborative Research Center, with Christoph Sander then officially assuming the status of Principal Investigator.
Sander will also enrich the curriculum in the Religious Studies program in the future; this winter semester, for example, in the form of the block seminar “Religion and Science: Historiography between Dialogue and Conflict.”
